K-1 Fiancé Visas

The K-1 Fiancé(e) Visa allows a foreign national to enter the United States for a period of up to 90 days based on a dating relationship with a U.S. citizen.

The visa is intended to allow a couple to experience living together in the United States before making the commitment to marry and become legally entwined. It is a good option for couples that have recently met or who have never resided together abroad.

The foreign national may enter the country on the condition that s/he either marries his/her fiancé(e) within 90 days or leaves the country. A K-1 Visa does not permit the foreign national to marry anyone other than the U.S. citizen designated on the application.

Because they provide access to the United States and authorization to work without any major legal commitments, K-1 Visas are good targets for fraud and are intensely scrutinized by the USCIS. Many couples with true relationships have a hard time securing K-1 Visas because they do not have the experience to put together a convincing application for the visa.
